Manchester clothing brand accuses Primark of ‘copying its design’ – insisting it’s ‘a step too far’

A Manchester brand has hit out at Primark after spotting similarities between its logo and a children’s hoodie from the store.

Clothing company Hikerdelic took to Instagram earlier this month and shared a clip titled ‘Primark can’t get their own ideas again’, showing a piece of clothing from the British retailer with a similar illustration to the one used by the smaller firm is used.

‘We’ve been sitting on this for a while,’ the caption read, before adding: ‘At the end of the day, this is a business that makes hundreds of millions a year in clear profit. They don’t have to step on toes.’

“A legal battle would be a distraction and far too expensive for a small business like ours, so we decided to share it here instead,” it continued.

The Hikerdelic illustration, by Daren Newman of Manchester, features a grassy hill under a pink and orange sunshine. It also features the words Hikerdelic within the hill, in a curved font, similar to the one used by Primark.

Meanwhile, the Primark children’s hoodie boasts a circular design, with the words ‘Explore Nature’ placed beneath trees, mountains and a colorful sunset.

Founded in 2012 by Proper Magazine’s Mark Smith and Neil Summers, Hikerdelic said in its Instagram post: ‘We’ve been sitting on this for a while.

‘From time to time we find things out there similar to ours, but usually it’s just a case of people being influenced by similar things. It’s hard to be 100% original.

Reaction: Social media users were quick to comment, with one writing: 'At least try changing it up a bit Primark.'

‘However, in our opinion, this is a step too far from a corporate behemoth we are all familiar with. We will be tempted to turn the other cheek and go about our business as usual.

‘But sometimes, when someone kicks sand in your face, you have to let them know it’s not really on. At the end of the day, this is a business that makes hundreds of millions a year in clear profit. They don’t have to step on toes.

A legal battle would be a distraction and far too expensive for a small business like ours, so we decided to share it here instead. This was the first logo we worked on with @daren_newman and while we have many more in our armoury, this is the one we started with.

‘It’s not just us who are affected, but also talented independent illustrators. Would be terrible if it were widely shared, wouldn’t it?’

Social media users were quick to comment, with one writing: ‘At least try changing it up a bit Primark.’

Another said: ‘Floor about how low it is. So lazy! How is it signed off. Isn’t it worth the fight? Gotta pick your battles man. David and Goliath.’

A third outraged individual added: ‘No way this is actually crazy!? It makes me very angry.’

A spokesperson for Primark told MailOnline: ‘We were concerned about an issue regarding the design of a children’s hoodie we sold last year. We are investigating this and are in contact with the brand.’
