Early in her career, Nancy Van de Vate, a celebrated modernist composer, would tell people about her work and sometimes be met with dismissive questions like “Do you write songs for children?” And though she often won competitions that she had entered anonymously, her daughter Katherine Van de Vate said, she rarely won when she entered them under her own name, a dynamic she attributed to gender discrimination. Ms. Van de Vate refused to let such barriers slow her down. In 1968, she became only the second woman to receive a doctorate in music composition in the United States, according to “Journeys Through the Life and Music of Nancy Van de Vate” (2005), by Laurdella Foulkes-Levy and Burt J. Madeline-Michelle Carthen has a unique dilemma. Despite obviously being very much alive, the 52-year-old from St. Louis, Missouri , has been dead on paper since 2007. “It’s like a haunting,” she told KSDK-TV, a local outlet, as she stressed how the mix-up destroyed her life as she knew it. All eyes are on California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) following the death of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) Friday, to see if he will make good on his promise to appoint a black woman to her seat. Newsom replied, “We have multiple names in mind, the answer is yes.” The appointment would be through 2024, when the seat is up for election. Three high profile Democrats are running for the seat — including a black woman. They are Reps. Barbara Lee, Katie Porter, and Adam Schiff. They are facing off for a March 5 primary, when the top two candidates advance. Lee is currently trailing Porter and Schiff. Newsom has said he would not appoint any of the current candidates to the position, ruling out Lee. Millions of viewers of this week’s Republican primary debate likely noticed a perhaps unusual commercial toward the end of the evening: an invitation to pray.  The 30-second ad featured actor Jonathan Roumie, best known for playing Jesus Christ in the television show “The Chosen.”  Roumie is one of the narrators on Hallow, a Catholic prayer app.  “Hey, I know you’re in the middle of something, but I wonder if you’d just take a few seconds to pray with me real quick,” said Roumie in the ad .  Roumie then began with the sign of the cross .  “Lord Jesus, come to us now, help us to surrender ourselves completely to you,” said Roumie .  “Help us to listen to your voice, even when we’re distracted, or tired. Three people including a teenage boy died when a sports car being chased by police in Indianapolis collided with another vehicle just minutes after officers ended their pursuit, authorities said Wednesday. An Indiana state trooper began the pursuit Tuesday night when the driver of a Dodge Challenger fled the officer’s attempt to pull it over on suspicion of reckless driving on Indianapolis’ far east side, state police said. The pursuit lasted about 12 minutes, traversing several city streets before shifting into rural areas of adjacent Hancock County and then back toward Indianapolis’ east side, police said. State troopers and other officers tried to deploy stop sticks but couldn’t get into position to stop the car, police said.
